ChatGPT launched on 30 November 2022 and crossed 1 million users in five days. By January 2023 it had 100M monthly active users, the fastest-growing consumer app in recorded history, eclipsing TikTok and Instagram. OpenAI began reporting weekly active users at DevDay in November 2023 (100M), and the curve compounded from there: 200M (Aug 2024), 300M (Dec 2024), 400M (Feb 2025), ~800M by late 2025, 900M by February 2026, one billion weekly users by August 2026, and more than 1.2 billion by October. In OpenAI’s own words, GPT-6 is “built for more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week.” Google reports more than 1 billion monthly Gemini app users — a different measure — and Anthropic publishes no comparable count, so cross-vendor totals cannot be summed.
