ChatGPT launched on 30 November 2022 and crossed 1 million users in five days. By January 2023 it had 100M monthly active users, the fastest-growing consumer app in recorded history, eclipsing TikTok and Instagram. OpenAI began reporting weekly active users at DevDay in November 2023 (100M), and the curve compounded from there: 200M (Aug 2024), 300M (Dec 2024), 400M (Feb 2025), ~800M by late 2025, 900M by February 2026, and one billion weekly users by August 2026. In OpenAI’s own words: “Every week, 1 billion people turn to ChatGPT.” Google reports more than 1 billion monthly Gemini app users — a different measure — and Anthropic publishes no comparable count, so cross-vendor totals cannot be honestly summed. One caveat: pre-November-2023 figures are monthly actives and later ones weekly, so they aren’t perfectly comparable, but the order-of-magnitude growth holds either way.
