Global Mobile Subscriptions

More mobile subscriptions than people on Earth: the fastest infrastructure rollout in history.

Saturated — Past one subscription per inhabitant the curve flattened; what compounds now is usage.

Mobile subscriptions grew from 34 million in 1993 to about 9.2 billion in 2025, roughly 112 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, per ITU. In much of Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia, mobile leapfrogged fixed-line infrastructure entirely, giving billions of people their first telephone connection and then their first internet access. 2G connected people, 3G put the internet in their pocket, and 4G made it fast; 5G is now redefining what a ‘subscription’ means. The exponential itself, though, is over. Once subscriptions passed one per inhabitant the curve flattened into saturation: growth has run at about 2.5% a year for the past decade — a mix of population growth, second SIMs and connected devices, though genuinely new users keep arriving too: GSMA’s unique-subscriber estimate rose from 4.7 to 5.8 billion over the same stretch. What compounds now is what each subscription carries, not how many exist.
